EVELYN MARIE REID

Evelyn Marie Reid, 82, of Uniondale, and formerly of Levittown, NY died Friday evening, July 30, 2010 at Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale. She was the widow of WWII veteran, Mark A. Reid who died in 1989.

Born August 1, 1927 in New York, NY, she was the daughter of the late Willi and Elise Detmere Petersen. She attended school in Germany and prior to retirement she was a travel agent for Austin Travel in Mellville, NY. She was also one of the first women to be named shift supervisor for McDonald's Restaurant, Long Island. Evelyn was a Lutheran and the matriarch of her family. She enjoyed animals and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are a son David and wife Laura Reid, Uniondale and two grandchildren Dale and Deegan; a sister Lotte Findling and a brother Willi Petersen; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother John.

Cremation is through the Kevin M Lesjack Funeral Home, 513 Main Street, Forest City.

Interment is at the convenience of the family.

HOLLIS H. PICKERING

Hollis H. Pickering, born April 4, 1930, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at the Barnes Kasson Hospital in Susquehanna after many years of declining health.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Joan (Ayres) Pickering; parents Howard & Lynette (Brown) Pickering; brother Morris Pickering; and sister Marge Stone.

Hollis is survived by 3 sisters and a brother-in-law Wanda Jones, Betty Morris, Joan & Bob Potter; children Ann & Bob Barnes, Larry & Peggie Pickering, Carol Paquette and Pete Niven, Ron & Sandy Pickering; 11 grandchildren; several great and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and special friend and neighbor Terry Stark.

He was a retired milk truck driver and was well known in the area. A memorial service for both Hollis and Joan will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

MARY RUTH BRADY

Mary Ruth Brady, 92, of Susquehanna, PA passed away at home on Monday, August 2, 2010 after an illness.

She was predeceased by her husband Austin Brady; parents Clyde & Emma LaBarre; sister Margaret Dooley; aunt & uncle Francis & John Ryan; grandson Homer Ferrante, III.

Mary is survived by son Timothy Tell, Susquehanna; daughter and son-in-law Charlene & Homer Ferrante, Susquehanna; granddaughter Jennifer & Mark Zappe, Thompson; granddaughter-in-law Tina Ferrante, Thompson; grandson specialist Ryan White; great grandchildren Megan, Stephanie and Mark Zappe; Courtney, Brandon and Briana Ferrante; great great granddaughter Madisonlyn Ferrante.

Mary was a member of the St. John’s Church and American Legion Post #86 Auxiliary both of Susquehanna. She was a 1937 graduate of the Laurel Hill Academy of Susquehanna. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with her family and wonderful neighbors.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. John’s Church of Susquehanna.

BRETT ALLEN STERLING

Brett Allen Sterling, 18, passed away suddenly August 4, 2010. He was predeceased by his great grandparents, Julius & Alice Lonzinski; and grandparents, Mary Williams, Cheryl Abbott, and Ralph Sterling.

He is survived by his mother, Michelle Shepard of Hallstead, PA and his father, Robert Sterling of New Milford, PA; grandfathers, Gary Shepard of Garnett, KS and Roger Williams of Susquehanna, PA; 2 brothers, Jeffery Sterling of Montrose, PA, and Tyler Williams of Hallstead, PA; 2 sisters, Courtney Sterling of Hallstead, PA, Katelynn Knight of New Milford, PA; and a special nephew Aiiden Calla. He is also survived by 10 aunts, Donna Sterling, Jenn Cina, Jeanine Sterling, Julie Therrien, Brenda Spencer, BobbiJo Jones, Kitty Pettrillo, Angel Shepard, Shanna Shepard, Christy Williams; 2 great uncles, Mike Lonzinski and Rick Lonzinski; 4 uncles, Roger W. Williams, Matthew Williams, Shawn Shepard, and Alan Shepard; several cousins; 4 best friends, Wayne Rafferty, David Calla, Josh Mess, and Dylan Havner; and several special friends.

Brett was an excellent mechanic and enjoyed taking anything apart and putting it back together. He enjoyed playing video games, dirt track racing and being a part of the pit crew for his Dad. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He would do anything for anyone. He also worked at McDonalds, Gibson, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations in Brett’s memory be made to People’s National Bank, memo: Brett Sterling.

A funeral service was held Monday, August 9, 2010 at the Tuttle-Yeisley Funeral Home, Hallstead, PA. Interment was made in Newman Cemetery.

RICHARD G. PELTZ

Richard G. Peltz, 70, of Susquehanna, PA, passed away Wednesday, August 04, 2010, at the Barnes Kasson Hospital, in Susquehanna, PA, after an illness.

Richard was born the son of the late Robert and Elsie (Cobb) Peltz. He was predeceased by his three brothers Russell Peltz, Larry Peltz, and George Peltz.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Judy Hadden Peltz; three sons Eric Peltz and fiancé Patti Rozelle, Richard Peltz Jr., and Gerry Peltz and fiancé Joan Theobald; three brothers Robert Jr. and Laura Peltz, Donald and Maryland Peltz, and Ronnie Peltz; two sisters Vivian Pickering and Virginia Klienbar; one sister-in-law Judy Peltz; and several nieces nephews and cousins.

Richard served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He and his wife Judy lived in Susquehanna for 27 years. Richard loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He will be deeply missed by his loving family.

A memorial service was held on Monday, August 9, 2010, at the Baptist Church on Jackson Ave., Susquehanna, PA, with Pastor Chris Williams officiating.

ALEX MICHAEL HINKLEY

Alex Michael Hinkley, 18, passed away unexpectedly in a motor vehicle accident on August 4, 2010. He is survived by his parents, Todd and Cheryl Hinkley.

Also surviving are a brother Justen; a sister Madison; grandparents; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Alex attended Parker Hill Community Church. He would have been a senior at Mountain View High School. He was an enthusiastic free spirited boy, who loved snow boarding, fishing, hunting, and paintballing. Alex was a great friend to those who knew and loved him. He was an amazing son, brother, grandson, nephew, and friend. He was known for his sense of humor and contagious smile and he will never be forgotten. He enjoyed drawing and designing pottery and spending time with family and friends. The impact of his life can not be told in so few words. He is loved and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

A funeral service was held at the Parker Hill Community Church, Dickson City Campus, Scranton, PA, on Saturday August 7, 2010. Interment was made in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hallstead, PA.

HARRIETT C. WALKER

Harriett C. Walker, 81, Hallstead, PA, passed away August 5, 2010, at home surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert J. Walker.

Also surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Russell and Butch Ross, Penny and Robert Carpenetti, and Gail and James Aldrich; a brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Janice Brown; her grandchildren, Frank and Christy Benacquisto, Jr. Connie and John Natichak, Michael and Jenella Wallace, Bobbie and David Gregory, Jr. Jennie Russell, Stephanie and Robert Gray, Ashley and Joe Emmons, Jamie and Marc Leach; many great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Robin Walker Wallace in 2005; and a great granddaughter, Alexandra Gray.

Harriett was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hallstead. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, and riding snowmobiles. Harriett assisted her husband in the successful operation of his hardware store. One of her greatest joys was watching her grandkids.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

JOHN R. CARPENTER

John R. Carpenter, 81, of Hallstead, PA passed away at home peacefully with his loving family by his side. He is survived by his wife, Hilda, “Honey.”

Also surviving are their children, Barbara and Danny Albertson, Springville, PA and Roger and Karen Carpenter, Binghamton, NY; four grandchildren, Breann and Martin Reynolds, Timmy and Brandy Carpenter, Brendan Carpenter, and Tanya Hemmingway; step grandchildren, Michael and Joe Singleton; six great grandchildren; a brother, Frankie Farugia; and a sister, Mary Kutz.

He was predeceased by his mother and step father, Lillian and Frank Farugia and a grandson, Jacob Carpenter.

John was employed as a welder at E.H. Titchners. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, and spending time with family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the Tuttle-Yeisley Funeral Home, Hallstead, PA. Inurnment will be made in Lynn Cemetery, Springville, PA. Friends may call on Thursday from 5-6 p.m., prior to the service.

Should friends so desire, expressions of sympathy may be made to the AseraCare Hospice Inc., 749 Northern Blvd., South Abington Township, PA 18411.

ELIZABETH A. BRIAR

Elizabeth A. Briar, 72, of Riverside Drive, left this world peacefully on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on February 9, 1938, in Elkins Park, PA, to the late Charles and Elizabeth Hay. Elizabeth is predeceased by her son William Briar.

She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years Robert Briar; two sons and two daughter-in-laws, Robert Briar and significant other Karen Yerecic, James and Anna Briar, and Debra Briar; one sister Helen Meltzer of Philadelphia, PA; ten grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and many special friends like Mary Monteforte.

Elizabeth was blessed with a loving family and friends who will dearly miss her in many ways.

A mass of Christian burial will be offered on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at 10 a.m., at the St. Martin’s Church in Jackson, PA, with Rev. Thomas Cappelloni officiating.

Burial will be in the St. John’s Cemetery, Susquehanna, PA.
