Resource Adventure Camp Scheduled

Endless Mountains Resource Conservation and Development Council and its partners are once again holding the Woodland Resource Adventure Camp for 2010. This twenty-three year old program (previously named Youth Forestry Camp) will be held on the campus of The Haft, near Dushore, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. The Woodland Resources Adventure Camp begins on Sunday, July 18 at 12:00 p.m. and runs through Thursday, July 22 at 3:00 p.m. WRA is an overnight camp and is open for students ages 12-16. This year’s theme is “Aquatics.” Most sessions will be held at The Haft, but one full day will be spent kayaking on the Susquehanna River. Participants will learn about the following topics: emerging contaminates, acid mine drainage, pond and lake ecology, wetlands, macroinvertebrates, stream dynamics and hydrology, fish management, boating safety, and much more.

WRA Camp is recommended for young people who want to learn about the outdoors and the environment through an excellent hands-on experience. The Camp provides an opportunity to prepare for Envirothon competitions, 4H events, and can be used as credit toward Scout Merit Badges.

A portion of the cost is provided in the form of a sponsorship. Students are encouraged to make every effort, on their own, to obtain local sponsorship from an organization or business. The Woodland Resource Adventure Camp committee has a limited number of sponsorships available, if students cannot find one on their own. The total fee covers the cost of meals, lodging, insurance, tour transportation, and program materials.

For any student interesting in attending the camp, please contact Endless Mountains RC&D Council to obtain a brochure. Any individual, group or business interested in becoming a sponsor of a student or the camp in general, please contact Endless Mountains RC&D office by phone at 570-265-5288 ext. 5.

For more information on the Woodland Resources Adventure Camp, contact Endless Mountains RC&D Council office by phone at 570-265-5288 ext. 5 visit or www.endlessmountainsrcd.org.

Functional Fitness Workshop Scheduled

The B/S/S/T Area Agency on Aging PrimeTime Health program is offering a free workshop on functional fitness for adults age 60 and older. This workshop will focus on how the loss of strength often associated with aging can reduce the ability to perform the basic “activities of daily living” (i.e. climbing, bending, lifting) that are important for individuals to live independently. It will also provide some basic exercises that can improve strength and functional ability at any age.

Many people tend to think of exercise as a means of improving specific health indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and body weight. The fact that exercise is also an important contributor to quality of life becomes most apparent later in life, when a reduced fitness level can limit the ability to maintain an active and independent lifestyle. Most individuals, irrespective of age and health status, can benefit from an appropriate, targeted exercise program. An emphasis on exercise as a means of improving functional capacity is an important tool for preserving quality of life.

The workshop will be held May 14, at Endless Mountains Health System Conference/Community room, 78 Grow Ave., Montrose, 10:00 a.m. to noon, and will include discussion as well as an exercise demonstration. Each participant will be given an exercise band to use for the class and to take home for continued use.

Instructor for the class will be Karen Johnson, a registered dietitian, with a master’s degree in exercise physiology from the U. of MD. She is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health-Fitness Instructor and currently teaches the Strong Women strength-training programs sponsored by the Penn State Cooperative Extension.

There is no charge for the class, but registration is required as class size is limited - first come basis. For more information and to register, call the AAA at 570-265-6121 or toll free 1-800-982-4346, by May 5.
