Lauretta Woodson Awards Presented

Kathleen Swaha, high school English teacher for the Montrose Area School District, and Diane Truman, secretary for Superintendent Ognosky, received the Lauretta Woodson Awards for a professional and a support staff member at the Montrose School Board meeting on June 8.

Pictured (l-r) are: Kathleen Swaha; Susquehanna Chapter PASR Ed. Support Chairperson, Ellen Holdredge; Diane Truman.

The award is named for Dr. Lauretta Woodson, a prominent Pennsylvania Educator, an assistant professor at Temple University, and an active member of Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR). She left a bequest to honor those who have exhibited creativity, initiative, and productivity relative to the learning process and growth of children and have had a positive influence on the learning process. This award was presented by Ellen Holdredge, Educational Support Chairperson of the Susquehanna County Chapter of PASR, and Gary Parker, President of that Chapter.

Swaha is a 33 year veteran teacher. After the high school changed the format for the grading of the senior project paper this year, this dedicated English teacher graded all of the papers during her Christmas vacation. Following the return of the papers for correction, she worked with the students to help them meet the project guidelines. Her hard work on this project is but one example exhibiting her devotion to the education of today’s youth.

Receiving the Woodson Award for Support Staff was Diane Truman, secretary for the Superintendent. She has held this position since 1985 for four different superintendents. Mr. Ognosky, current superintendent, described her as “an outstanding administrative assistant who has exceptional people and communication skills.”

Barbara Bush, a retiree from Montrose Area School District, stated that these two women were “excellent choices.” Their hard work and dedication to the children in Montrose Area School District proved that they merited the award given to them by PASR.
