Local Students Named IUP Provost Scholars

Amanda Schmidt Is Student of the Month

Eliza Vagni, Principal of Mountain View High School, Kingsley, announced the selection of Amanda Schmidt, daughter of Kevin and Rebecca Schmidt, Kingsley, as the Forest City Rotary “Student of the Month” for December. She merited this recognition on the basis of high scholastic achievement, participation to numerous extracurricular and community activities, and potential service to society in her future professional career.

An honor student in the Class of 2009, Amanda is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, the Student Council, Arts Alive, and Scholastic Bowl. She has also been active in a dramatic production, serves as a tutor, and trained elementary students at the Track Clinic.

Her athletic interests include team participation in cross country and track. Amanda received the Ray A. Kroc Award, attended the Johns Hopkins Program for Outstanding Scholars and has been selected as the N.E.I.U. Scholar of the Year. Her graduation project involved initiating the Spanish Club at Mountain View.

Amanda’s work experience is as a waitress at Mandy’s Café in Hallstead, where she has served during her high school years.

Every summer since she was in junior high school, Amanda has attended various enrichment classes in math and science to prepare for a career as a pharmacist. She plans to attend a major university to study for a doctoral degree in pharmacy.

Amanda and her parents were invited to be guests at the December 1 meeting of the Forest City Rotary Club, whose members honored her for her achievements and service to others.
