Blue Ridge Elementary Celebrates Reading

Blue Ridge Elementary participated in the Scholastic’s “READ FOR 2007.” On Wednesday, December 5, Blue Ridge Elementary students joined millions of other students around the world in reading for half an hour. The Scholastic-sponsored event encouraged schools to create a reading theme to set the stage for their unified reading activity.

Pictured (l-r) during the Blue Ridge Elementary Read for 2007 are fifth grade students Erin Perry, Paeton Upright and Jeshua DeJesse.

Blue Ridge Elementary chose the theme, “It’s a Jungle In Here,” and each grade level went about decorating their classroom reading areas with jungle vines, trees and animals. A special jungle lunch was prepared to go along with the reading theme. Students were invited to wear animal patterned clothing and hats while reading in their jungle environments. Students selected books of their choice to read, and were made aware of the fact that million of other students around the world were participating in this initiative at exactly the same time.

At the close of the students’ reading time, the PTO provided snacks/refreshments. The activity gave the students and teachers the opportunity to participate in a program that encourages children all over the world to celebrate the joy of reading.

Blue Ridge Students Support Toys For Tots

Blue Ridge Elementary students and staff learned that the best gift to give for the holiday season is helping others. This holiday season, students and staff at Blue Ridge wore their favorite hats to school for the day to raise money for Toys for Tots. With their donations, Blue Ridge faculty member, Kristen Hinkley, who created Toys for Tots for the Blue Ridge community, will purchase toys, games and clothing for area families. Pictured wearing their favorite hats are: front row – Cheyne Brulla, Lindsey Rupakus, Emalee Carr, Luis Toban; back row – Mrs. Goff, Alexander Stenfo, Ms. Levine, Mrs. Piorkowski.
