In only the second forensics tournament of his career, Elk Lake seventh grader Austin Cohen, at the Msgr. Lyons Forensics Tournament at Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown, accomplished something in Junior Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate that only one other seventh grade debater has ever done: he placed in the top three. Elk Lake seventh grader Austin Cohen placed in the top three in Junior Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the Msgr. Lyons Forensics Tournament at Delone Catholic High School. Cohen compiled a two-win and one-loss record in JV LD in three preliminary rounds by defeating debaters from Dallastown High School. His only loss came to a debater from Shikellamy High School. As a result of his preliminary record, Cohen placed third in JV LD, a field in which Cohen was the only junior high competitor. “Austin’s performance at this tournament was the result of a lot of hard work over the past month. This is an incredible start to a career,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious. The Elk Lake Forensics Team will travel to Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, NJ to compete at the Ridge Debates on December 7-8. They will then compete at a Scranton Catholic Forensics League Tournament at Pocono Mountain West High School on December 15.
The North-Eastern Pennsylvania Telephone Company has provided a generous, first-year contribution of $30,000 to the K-12 Scholarship Program administered by The Community Foundation of Susquehanna & Wyoming Counties. The company has also pledged an additional $30,000 for scholarship assistance for the 2008-2009 school year. This year’s donation will help provide scholarships to over 120 local students attending nine schools and programs. During the five years The Community Foundation has administered these scholarships, more than 500 kindergarten through 12th grade students have received tuition assistance to attend 21 local schools and educational programs. Peter Quigg, Director of Development for The Community Foundation, states, “We very much appreciate this exceptional contribution from NEP Telephone Co. The Tourje family, who controls the phone company, has shown sincere concern for local families and their children.” In addition to this donation for K-12 Scholarships, the Tourjes also hold the Jessie Osgood Tourje Memorial Fund with The Community Foundation, which is intended to provide grants to the Blue Ridge, Forest City Regional, Mountain View, and Susquehanna Community School Districts for special projects in the local schools. Through these two avenues of support the Tourje family, and the employees of NEP Telephone, have exhibited substantial support for local schools, students, and families.
