R.E.S.C.U.E. Scholarship Winners Announced

The Wayne/Susquehanna Chapter of the environmental group R.E.S.C.U.E. has made a cash award of $100.00 to six graduating seniors, Class of 2007 in six school districts within Wayne/Susquehanna R.E.S.C.U.E. geographical boundaries.

Qualifications for the award include good citizenship, leadership in an environmental area, past interest in environmental projects, and/or the possibility of a future career in an area that would benefit the environment.

This year’s recipients are Timothy Haynes from Susquehanna Community School District; James Kroll from Western Wayne High School; Raymond Hanley from Honesdale High School; John Corbin from Mountain View High School; Gary Tuttle from Forest City Regional High School; Daniel Gill from Hancock Central High School.

Congratulations to the winners in 2007.

Marika Merritt To Attend Keystone Girls State Conf.

Marika Nichole Merritt, a junior at Blue Ridge High School, has been selected by the Hallstead-Great Bend Unit 357 of the American Legion Auxiliary, to attend Keystone Girls State.

The “experience in government” will be held at Shippensburg University, June 17-23 and is the 62nd session sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. About 200 girls are brought together through sponsorship of local Auxiliary units and other organizations to study government on city, county and state levels. During the week, the girls will elect city, county, and state officials, including governor, lieutenant governor, other officers, and an outstanding citizen. Two senators will attend Girls Nation in the Washington, DC area in July.

Marika is the granddaughter of Margo and Gary Merritt of Susquehanna. She is active in the National Honor Society, Blue Ridge High School Band, President-elect of FBLA, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, SADD, Pride Club, Prom Committee, and Drama Club. She is also a member of UMCC Youth Group, Senior Girl Scouts, and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 357.

Carolyn Rebecca Martens, New Milford, graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University on April 28, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education.

Travis Hoadley Graduates Bucknell U. With Honors

Lewisburg, PA – Bucknell University conferred more than 800 bachelor’s and master’s degrees during commencement ceremonies May 20. Degrees were awarded for studies in liberal arts and professional programs in engineering, education, management and music.

Travis D. Hoadley, Hop Bottom, son of David and Mona Hoadley and a 2003 graduate of Mountain View High School, graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Humanities and English and departmental honors in Comparative Humanities.

Scholarship Winners Announced

Miss Penny’s Diner in  Montrose sponsored a golf tournament at Tall Pines Players Club in Friendsville in September, 2006. Proceeds from the tournament were awarded to five students in two school districts; each student was awarded $500.00 toward their continuing education.

The Class of 2007 winners of the scholarship awards were as follows.

From Montrose Area High School, Nicole Fuller, Samantha Wickizer and Ashley Huff.

From the Elk Lake School District, the recipients were Nicolette Canfield and John Brooks.
