Blue Ridge AwardedNature Trail Grant

The Blue Ridge School District was awarded a grant to reestablish an Educational Nature Trail on Pennsylvania game lands, bordering the school property. The award was announced at the annual Lackawanna Valley Heritage Awards ceremony on January 25.

Pictured (l-r) are: Natalie Solfanelli, Director, LVHA; Robert Cordaro, Lackawanna County Commissioner; Robert Dietz, Blue Ridge Principal.

Blue Ridge has established a committee of administrators, faculty and students to work with Mr. Lipinsky from the Pennsylvania State Game Lands Commission to identify the land that will be used to create the nature trail. The nature trail will allow students and the community to become caretakers for our forest region. The project puts together teachers, students, forestry representatives and community environmentalists, working towards a common goal, providing an educational resource. The nature trail will be used as an environmental science laboratory for all Blue Ridge students.

If members of the community or organizations are interested in assisting with the project, contact Mr. Dietz, Elementary Principal, to become involved.

Brooke L. Hinkley Receives Award

Brooke L. Hinkley, Hallstead, was one of four University of Scranton students who received a Rose Kelly Award at a recent awards ceremony on campus.

Kenneth R. Lord, Ph.D, associate dean of the Kania School of Management at the University of Scranton, presents Brook Hinkley with the Rose Kelly Award.

The Rose Kelly Award was established by a University of Scranton alumnus, Joseph Wineburgh, Ph.D, to link the efforts of educators to the achievements of college students. The award is presented jointly to a student in each of the four colleges who has completed two years at the University and to the teacher whom he or she recognizes as having a great impact on his or her life. Students are selected based on exemplary achievement in both academics and general campus involvement.

Ms. Hinkley, a third-year student in the university’s Kania School of Management, nominated her teacher from Blue Ridge High School, Patty Petula.

Fabulous Finish For EL Forensics Team

Hoping to get a few more rounds in against quality competition, the Elk Lake Forensics team traveled to the Pennsbury Falcon Invitational, which brought together the top teams from New York, Maryland, Virginia, and eastern Pennsylvania, in suburban Philadelphia on February 2-3.

What the team received from the tournament was a lot more than just extra rounds. It was two elimination round competitors and a Lincoln-Douglas Debate Champion.

EL Forensics Team Place-Winners at PFI Tournament, Shea Skinner – 13th Place in LD Debate and Molly Copeland – LD Debate Champion.

Senior Molly Copeland opened the tournament with two losses but she battled back, won her next four rounds against debaters from Loyola-Blakefield, Notre Dame, Shikellamy, and Newburgh Free Academy high schools, and advanced to the Octa-Final Round, the top 16 debaters from a field of 45, as the seventh seeded debater.

Eighth-grader Shea Skinner defeated the runner up in LD Debate in the last two major tournaments, Jay Garlapati from Unionville High School, as well as a debater from Broad Run High School and two debaters from Catonsville High School in his journey to the Octa-Final Round, his first break to an elimination round in his career, as the 13th seed.

In Octa-Finals, Copeland had no trouble with Ben Schneider from Friends Select High School as she won a unanimous 3-0 decision.

Skinner struggled against LaSalle College High School junior John Diluilo and lost a 3-0 decision. As a result of this loss, he placed 13th in the tournament.

In Quarter-Finals, Copeland notched a split decision over Perkiomen Valley’s Karlyn Gorski, the second seeded debater, who was undefeated up to this point.

Evan Burke, the 11th seed, from Unionville High School was no problem for Copeland as she defeated him and advanced to Finals.

Copeland faced John Diluilo from LaSalle College High School in Finals. Copeland’s solid analysis and personable delivery earned her a split decision win and the PFI Lincoln-Douglas Debate Championship.

Copeland’s performance also landed her in the EL Forensics Team record book as the first debater to compete in 10 rounds in one tournament and only the second debater to win eight debates in a single tournament.

“This was an incredible performance from both of our debaters. Molly had the strongest performance of the season, and maybe, her career. As an eighth grader against a field of varsity high school debaters, Shea had an incredible tournament. Not only was it his first break to eliminations but it was his first break in varsity,” commented EL Forensics Director Keith Brosious.

The EL Forensics Team was set to wrap up its regular season with a Scranton Catholic Forensics League Tournament at Pocono Mountain West High School on February 10.

On February 24, the team begins its qualifying season at the PA High School Speech League District 8 Championship Tournament at Scranton High School.
