Great American Smokeout

Every November for the past 30 years, smokers from across the United States have had a chance to quit smoking by joining the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout. This nationwide event helps to educate people about the hazards of tobacco and encourages smokers to quit for good. It’s also a day of celebration for young people who do not smoke or who have chosen to quit smoking. Many communities have local volunteers who support quitters, publicize the event, press for tougher laws to restrict tobacco use, and discourage teenagers from ever starting to smoke.

To learn more about the American Cancer Society and collaborative efforts, or Smokeout activities in your community on Thursday, November 16, call toll-free 1-888-227-5445 and press 3, or 383-4701.

If You Missed It...

The Lathrop Township Historical Society will have on display at its open house, Sunday, November 12, at the Union Grange Hall, Lathrop Township, the display that was set up in Hop Bottom for its 125th anniversary. The time will be from 1 to 3 p.m.

By popular demand, many people have asked the Society to redisplay the memorabilia. There were many before and after pictures of Hop Bottom and the area, school photos, and items that were used in “olden days.”

Refreshments will be served and books, post cards, and other items will be available.
