Youth Leadership Camp Blasts Off

Twenty one students from the fourth, fifth and sixth grades of the County’s elementary schools participated in this year’s YO! (Youth Opportunities) Youth Leadership Camp, at Montrose Area High School from July 19 through 23. This year’s theme was "Blast Off to LeaderSHIP."

Returning camp counselors, who also are graduates of the Youth Leadership program, were Holly Backo, recent graduate of Susquehanna Community High School and Carrie Robinson, Jeff Robinson, and Holly Templeton, recent graduates of Montrose Area High School. Bethany Templeton and Desirea Aldrich, both from Montrose Area High School, were first-year camp counselors.

The focus of the camp was to provide an opportunity for grade-school-aged students to begin learning skills needed to become leaders. Roselyn Hibbard, Brandy Pitcher and Christina Carter of Trehab served as Directors of the program and used the principles of rocketry and space flight to present various leadership topics, including public speaking, goal setting, assertiveness, and problem solving.

Assisting with the camp were: Joann Kowalski, Rachel Weaver and LouAnn Kiefer of Penn State Cooperative Extension in Susquehanna County; Ray Osburn, Susquehanna County Services for Children and Youth; Bob Templeton, Susquehanna County Department of Planning; and Ryan Tator, EMT.

The Montrose Rotary Club, through its Spring fund-raiser, and a benefit concert featuring local singer/songwriters Corky Staats and Rosi Hibbard provided additional funding for this year’s YO Camp.
