MELVIN D. ABBOTT

Melvin D. Abbott, 80, of Montrose, PA, died Sunday, August 17, 2003 at his residence. Born April 28, 1923 in Jermyn, NY, he was the son of the late Elden and Alida (Foster) Abbott. His wife of 57 years, Ellen L. (Barnhart) Abbott survives him.

He was a Hammerman for Union Forging Company, Endicott, NY, for 40 years and retired in 1985. A veteran of World War II, he served in China, Burma, and the India Theater. He was a woodsman, enjoyed hunting, fishing and loved the great outdoors, especially his beloved "Abbott Acres." He was a member of Boy Scout Leader Troop #27, a Charter Member of the Liberty Park Association and was Grange Citizen of the year for the Lawsville Grange.

Besides his wife, survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Joan E. and Ray Fairman, Athens, GA, Jill L. and Allen Luce, Hallstead, PA, Melody A. and David Cunningham, Montrose, PA, Kim L. and Tom Micalizzi, Newark Valley, NY; son and daughter-in-law, Barry M. and Maureen Abbott, Montrose, PA; 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sisters, Almina DeGraw, Hallstead, PA, Naomi Wenzel, Susquehanna, PA; brother and sister-in-law, James and Gail Abbott, Lanesboro, PA; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Bobby B. Abbott; and a grandson, Evan Devere Luce.

Services were held Thursday, August 21, 2003 at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., a Selected Independent Funeral Home, Montrose, PA.

If desired, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Stanfordville Baptist Church, RR 1, Box 1654, Hallstead, PA 18822.

HUBERT A. MURPHY

Hubert A. Murphy, 91, of Brackney, PA, died Friday afternoon, August 15, 2003. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Helen Murphy in 1998; a daughter, Ann; and son-in-law, Arthur Gardner.

He is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Patricia A. Gardner, Friendsville, PA, Mary and John Butler, Little Meadows, PA; two sons and daughters-in-law, Francis J. and Suzanne Murphy, Rochester, Dennis J. and Stephanie Murphy, Schnecksville, PA; ten grandchildren, Brian Gardner, Jodi and Scott Daniels, Dennis and Haley Butler, Stefan Murphy, Brandon and Dawn Murphy, Justin and Debra Murphy, Ryan Murphy and Justin McAllister, Patrick Murphy, Kathryn Murphy, Michael Murphy; three great-grandchildren, AJ Gardner, Kaley Murphy, Justin Murphy; a sister, Lucille Walsh; sister-in-law, Lil Crowley; several nieces and nephews.

Hubert was a lifelong member of St. Augustine’s Church, Silver Lake, PA and a founding member of St. Augustine’s Cemetery Association. He was a member and first Fire Chief of the Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Co. He was supervisor of Silver Lake Township for 38 years; Committeeman for the Democratic Party and member of the Susquehanna County Planning Commission.

Funeral services were held from Binghamton, NY and from St. Augustine’s Church, where a Funeral Mass was offered. Burial, St. Augustine’s Cemetery.

The family requests that, if desired, expressions of sympathy in memory of Hubert be made to St. Augustine’s Church Handicap Ramp Fund, Box 1402, Forest City, PA 18818; or the Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Co., Brackney, PA 18812.
