WINIFRED D. MATTHEWS

Winifred D. Matthews, 71, Susquehanna, PA, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at Barnes-Kasson County Hospital, Susquehanna, after an illness.

She was born in Susquehanna, the daughter of the late John Henry and Mary Deakin.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Marian Lyons.

Winifred is survived by one son, George Matthews, Lakeland, FL; two daughters, Alice Matthews, Jackson, PA, Anne LaBarre, Susquehanna; two brothers, Jon Deakin, Susquehanna, Jay Deakin, Tennessee; one sister, Lorraine Jackson, Lakeland, FL; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Susquehanna, and Order of the Eastern Star. She was a veteran of the US Army. Winifred was a very special mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed by all.

Funeral services were held from Hennessey’s Funeral Home, Susquehanna, with the Pastor Fred Johnson officiating. Burial, Evergreen Cemetery, Susquehanna.

VERLA M. BUCKEL

Verla M. Buckel, 89, Ithaca, NY, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at the Reconstruction Home, Ithaca, NY. She was born in Great Bend, PA, daughter of the late Bernard and Marie Craft June and was the widow of Michael Buckel, who died in 1971.

Verla is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Carl A. Valentino, Ithaca; her grandchildren, Michael Valentino, Susan (Jeffrey) Sewell, Joanne (Chris) Cowulich. She is also survived by her eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Ruth Henderson, Susquehanna, PA.

Private services with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Susquehanna, PA, will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Verla’s memory may be directed to the Reconstruction Home, 318 S. Albany St., Ithaca, NY 14850; Ithacare c/o Steve Mount, 1 Bella Vista Dr., Ithaca, NY 14850; or the Ithaca Breast Cancer Alliance, 100 W. Seneca St., Ithaca, NY 14850.

Arrangements were made by the Bangs Funeral Home.

JAMES W. BARTON

James W. Barton, 48, Susquehanna, passed away at home on Thursday, April 10, 2003.

He is survived by his fiancee, Kay Buffington; two daughters, Brittany Sue and Debra Christine Barton; his parents, Robert and Beatrice Barton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Elaine and Louis Napolitano, Susan and Jeffrey Wheeler; one brother, Eugene Barton; three nieces, Sheila and Timothy Gulley, Theresa and William Leinauer, Shianne Barton; one great-niece, Stacey Gulley; four great-nephews, Robert Gulley, Patrick Johnson, Edward Kenny III, William Leinauer V; many aunts, uncles, cousins.

James attended Susquehanna Community High School and was a veteran of the US Army. He worked as a quarryman in the local stone quarries. James enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had many friends and will be deeply missed by all.

A private memorial service will be held by the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the Susquehanna Fire Department, P.O. Box 175, Susquehanna, PA 18847.

JEAN ANN HORRIGAN FUNERAL SERVICE

A funeral service for Jean Ann Horrigan will be held Thursday, April 24, 11:00 a.m. at Lanesboro Community Church, Lanesboro, PA.

Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery immediately following the service.
