HEADLINES: Well, the "New Year" is here again. And as always, at the beginning of a new calendar year, there is a fresh new spirit with thoughts of new beginnings, a new fresh outlook and new self improvement ideas (i.e. resolutions). Unfortunately, too often these new ideas of changes fade back into the same 'ol rut once again. And though disappointed, we shake it off and continue in our own worlds, hoping for the best. There are, however, some new things that can happen to a person that will last the rest of your life and yea into eternity! New things that will never change or reverse themselves! Though each is unique they all hinge off of the first one I'll mention and that is to experience the "New" birth. (Spiritually speaking of course.) This is what Jesus talked about in John 3:5 where he said, " Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." To be "Born Again" means to repent and exercise faith in Christ to save you from the penalty and power of sin. It is to "see the light" that Jesus paid the penalty that you owed and to accept His substitutionary death in your stead to satisfy the justice of God. When this takes place, the Spirit of God enters into your spirit and you are spiritually born into the family of God. Now the "New" stuff or changes really kick in! For now you have a "New" beginning with God (Heb. 8:12). You have a "New" Father and family (John 8:41-47), A "New" name is written down in Heaven (Yours!!) Philip. 4:3. You're now part of a "New" Kingdom (Col. 1:13). You'll then have a new nature with new desires, priorities and values (II Cor. 5:17). And of course a "New " eternal destination! (Rev. 21:6-8). I can go on and on. With all the various things that will clamor for your attention, time and resources this coming year, one would be wise to start the new year off with first taking thought for the eternal. Someone said, " Don't put off till tomorrow, what you can do today." And someone else said ,"The road to hell is paved with good intentions". So Make the first new thing you decide to do this new year last forever!
