HEADLINES: Master Sgt. James H. Lumpkin Jr. has retired from the U.S. Air Force after more than 20 years of faithful and honorable military service to the nation. Prior to retiring, Lumpkin was assigned to the 23rd Wing at Moody Air Force Base, Ga., as a squadron superintendent. Lumpkin joined the Air Force in May 1990, completed basic military training, and then graduated from aerospace physiology and aircraft loadplanning mathematics specialty training. He completed the C-130 aircraft Basic Loadmaster Course, and mission and tactical operations training at Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark. His subsequent assignments included duty at Pope Air Force Base, N.C., with deployments overseas to serve in support of Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf region, and Operations Southern Watch and Vigilant Warrior in Saudi Arabia. He served in Australia with the 5th Space Warning Squadron, a unit which tracked more than 6,000 objects at any one time to ensure the safety of the U.S. and allied nations from a ballistic missile nuclear attack. Lumpkin served as a weather forecaster and global weather forecaster supporting Operations Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom while assigned at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.; served as the combat weather team flight chief and supervisor of the First Term Airman Center while assigned at Altus Air Force Base, Okla.; and served as the combat weather team flight chief and as supervisor of mobility operations and squadron superintendent, with a deployment overseas to serve in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom while assigned at Moody Air Force Base, Ga. He is the son of James H. Lumpkin Sr. of Cuthbert, Ga., and the brother of Maureen Smith of Tom Sawyer Drive, Blakely, Ga. His wife, Sandy, is the daughter of Mike and Lori Cooke of Brackney, Pa. The master sergeant and his wife have one son, Jacob.
