Blue Christmas Service

The United Methodist Community Church on Main St., Great Bend will offer a Blue Christmas Service on Sunday, December 21 at 7:00 p.m.

Many people may be facing the holiday after the death of a loved one or after a divorce. Perhaps they have been unable to have a child, or have suffered through an emotional trauma, or perhaps they feel pressured and overwhelmed by holiday preparations.

This Blue Christmas Service helps to reach that part of the community who may not find comfort in the forced joyfulness of this season. The church will provide a sacred place of grieving. This service is also referred to as a “Longest Night Service” and has traditionally been held on the evening of the winter solstice.

All are welcome to attend this special service of comfort that will include scripture, music and meditation.

County Library Holds Annual Book Contest

The Susquehanna County Historical Society & Free Library Association is sponsoring the 13th "Write and Illustrate Your Own Picture Book Contest" for Susquehanna County students in grades K-12.

Entrants should submit original picture books they have written and illustrated on or before Wednesday, February 11, to the branch or school libraries, or to the Main Library in Montrose by the final deadline of Saturday, February 14. See the rules booklet (available at the main library and at the branches in Forest City, Hallstead-Great Bend, and Susquehanna) for complete rules, or visit the webpage: www.susqcolibrary.org/wiobc. An entry form must be submitted with each manuscript. Rules and forms have also been distributed to school libraries.

Winners will be chosen in each of three or four grade categories (depending on the number of entries). The first place entries will be professionally hardbound and added to the library's collection – with the author and title listed in the library's online catalog, and in the state-wide ACCESS-PA database! The first-place winners will also receive their own hardbound copy (winner makes the copy). Second and third place entries will be paperbound and returned to the authors. All contestants will receive a Certificate of Recognition and personal comments on their books.

"Our collection of great books by young Susquehanna County authors is growing – to date we have well over one hundred!" says Administrator/Librarian Susan Stone. "Stop by your local library to borrow past years' winning books."

Santa Raffle To Benefit Library

The Sweet Spot/Chocolates by Leopold is donating their three-foot tall chocolate Santa to be raffled in support of the Susquehanna County Historical Society & Free Library Association. This spectacular Santa was created with the help of  volunteers, who rolled the mold up and down Public Ave. in Montrose to set the chocolate, and has been decorated with colorful frosting and candies. Raffle tickets are  available at all four county library locations (Forest City, Hallstead/Great Bend, Montrose, and Susquehanna) through December 18. The drawing will be held at the Sweet Spot (30 Church St., Montrose) at noon on Saturday, December 20, and tickets will be sold there up until the moment the winning ticket is drawn. Just think of your children or grandchildren's faces when they see this Santa at your house! And if you don't win, you still helped a good cause.
