HEADLINES: Alana Speth Named First Group Scholar Northampton, MA – Alana Speth, daughter of Del Speth and Shirley Meyer Speth, Nicholson was named a First Group Scholar and was named to the Dean’s List at Smith College for the 2006-07 school year. The Dean’s List recognizes those students with grade point averages of 3.333 or above. First Group Scholars are further recognized for their particularly high level of achievement, and they generally represent the top ten percent of the class. Alana graduated from Mt. View High School and is majoring in History at Smith. She will graduate from Smith College in May, 2008.
Christina Whitney Is Outstanding Graduate Christina May Whitney, New Milford, pictured above (right) is congratulated by Duncan M. Perry, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Graduate and Continuing Education at The University of Scranton. Christina received an outstanding graduate award in school counseling.
Daniel Weber Receives Burchell Scholarship The William Jasper Burchell Memorial Scholarship was presented to Daniel Weber of New Milford. He is the son of Kevin and Laurie Weber. This scholarship has been awarded annually since 2001 to a young person from South New Milford Baptist Church to aid them in their planned involvement in Christian ministry. It is given to honor the son of Bill and Margo Burchell. Dan graduated from Blue Ridge High School in 2006 and recently completed his first year at Houghton College, Houghton, NY. He plans to continue in intercultural studies and possibly work with a missionary aid organization such as World Vision. Last year's recipient, Amberlynne Neild Claussen, with her husband, Andrew recently finished Jungle Camp at New Tribes Mission Centre in Ontario, Canada. They are expecting a son in late October. They hope to be on the field in Indonesia in 2009.
Democratic Women Award Scholarships Each year, the Susquehanna County Federated Democratic Women’s Club presents awards of $100 to a graduate in each of the county’s six schools. Amanda Singer, Elk Lake High School, will attend Penn State University, Wilkes-Barre Campus, to study Business Administration. Angelica West, Montrose High School, will attend the University of Pittsburgh to study Nursing. Meghan Gardoski, Mountain View High School, will attend Kutztown University. Stacy Thatcher, Blue Ridge High School. Jonathan Chesnick, Forest City High School, will attend Penn State University, Wilkes-Barre campus to study Surveying and Civil Engineering. Meghan Gilleran, Susquehanna Community High School, will attend Bloomsburg University to study Elementary Education.
