Education Day At Christian Academy

The Susquehanna County Conservation District (SCCD) visited the Faith Mountain Christian Academy, New Milford, on January 10. Roger Sherwood, Public Outreach and Education, helped the students make “dirt” pudding, with instant pudding, Oreo cookies and gummy worms while explaining soil facts and why worms are excellent for soil health. The Faith Mountain Christian Academy should be proud of their students as they were very attentive for the program.

Faith Mountain Christian Academy enjoys learning about soil facts at their Environmental Education Day held January, 10.

The Conservation District would like to thank Mrs. Frantz for the invitation to visit their school and would like to encourage other school districts in Susquehanna County to contact SCCD if they would like an environmental demonstration in the future. Contact person is Roger Sherwood, 278-4600 ext. 285.

Deadlines For PHEAA Grants

HARRISBURG – Students seeking state higher education assistance grants for the 2005-06 academic year have until May 1 to apply, Rep. Sandra Major (R-Susquehanna/Wayne/Wyoming), said today.

State grants are provided to qualified Pennsylvania applicants through the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) and do not have to be repaid. Students must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to be considered.

May 1 is the application deadline for all students seeking to renew their state grant aid regardless of their program of study and for all other applicants for bachelor's degree programs, including persons enrolling in college transfer programs at two-year community or junior colleges.

Aug. 1 is the application deadline for all first-time applicants who plan to enroll in business or trade schools, hospital schools of nursing or two-year non-transferable programs at community or junior colleges. Summer school students may also qualify for state grant funds with some exceptions applying.

Major, a member of PHEAA's board of directors, encourages students to apply even if the deadlines have passed. Late applications may qualify for an award if funds permit.

For more information on PHEAA grants or for an application, visit the PHEAA Web site at www.pheaa.org or contact Major's district offices.

Major's district offices are at Route 706 Lake Montrose, RR 7 Box 7186, Montrose, PA 18801 (telephone: 570-278-3374) and 130 N. Bridge Street, Tunkhannock, PA 18657 (telephone: 570-836-5888).
