Cpt. David Zelkowitz Receives Bronze Star

Captain David Zelkowitz, a 1992 graduate of Blue Ridge High School was awarded a Bronze Star by the US Army during his fifteen-month deployment in Iraq.

The award reads: "To Captain David Zelkowitz for exceptionally meritorious service while serving as Company Commander for the 1st Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His outstanding leadership, selfless service, dedication to duty, and loyalty to his soldiers contributed immeasurably to the success of the company. His actions reflect distinct credit upon himself, the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, Task Force 1st Armored Division and the United States Army."

Captain Zelkowitz was originally scheduled to come home in April, 2004, but the Shia uprising in Baghdad caused his tour of duty to be extended for three months. During that time, he and the men of Bravo Company were under heavy mortar fire, attacked by roadside bombs, the object of suicide bombers, and the target of rocket propelled grenades.

David is the son of Mr. Harvey Zelkowitz, Hallstead and Mrs. Joan Eidener, Montrose.

David is currently stationed in Germany, with the 1st Armored Division.
