Blue Ridge 4th Grade Creates African Art

Last month Fourth Grade Students at Blue Ridge Elementary were presented with a talk on African Art by Binghamton Art Museum Education Curator, Sylvia Ivanova. Mrs. Ivanova, who takes museum pieces into the classrooms as part of her "Art in a Suitcase" program, presented and discussed African works that were recently donated to the museum’s permanent collection. The following week the students looked forward to Ms. Ivanova’s return to instruct them on painting African Mud Cloth.

With their art teacher, Ms. Tersteeg, the students built African masks, which were inspired by the seeing the museum’s visit. The students will exhibit their African art projects at their annual Art Exhibit and Concert at 6:30 p.m. on April 27 in the Blue Ridge High School auditorium lobby. The program was supported by funding from the PTO. The community is welcome to attend.

Blue Ridge Elementary Students Contribute

Each year the AFA (Artists For Art) gallery, 514 Lackawanna Ave., Scranton, Pa., hosts an Earth Day exhibit during the month of April. This year the theme for the exhibit features traditional Earth Day related artwork from over 40 individual artists and collaborative artworks, consisting of art in various medium where two or more people worked together.

The Blue Ridge Elementary Gifted Class collaborated on a rain forest project which has been installed in the front window of the gallery. Students learned about many aspects of the rain forest, including its effect on global climate, its diversity of plant and animal life and its numerous resources. They also learned about the current threats to the rain forests and steps that they could take to help preserve them. Each student picked a rain forest animal to research and made a papier-mâché model of their animal to display along with trees, vines and rain forest flowers to create a total installation for their exhibit.

Mt. View Elementary Sets Spring Concert

If the high price of gas or the hassles and fears of long distance travel have kept you at home for far too long, then you need to jump aboard the Spring Concert Express at Mountain View! The Elementary Band will take its audience on a worldwide tour via music and the Chorus will attempt to include all 50 states in their USA musical tribute.

The students of the Mountain View Elementary 5th and 6th grade band and chorus plan to stage this imaginary trip as the theme of their 2004 Spring Concert, scheduled for May 7, 7:00 p.m. at the Mountain View High School Auditorium. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free (an optional free-will donation may be given at the door; also, a bake sale sponsored by the band parents will donate proceeds toward the purchase of an elementary band instrument.)

The elementary band will fill the stage with its 95 members representing nearly 50% of Mountain View's 5th and 6th grade students. These talented musicians have been rehearsing their concert music in "Advanced Band" and "Beginner Band" groupings since the first week of February. During the latter part of April, both groups will combine their efforts into one big sound making their final preparations in only four full group rehearsals for the big night on May 7.

The band will open the evening of entertainment with the traditional "Star-Spangled Banner" after which they will embark on a program of musical variety highlighting music from around the world. A Russian "Ukrainian Overture" will give way to a student favorite setting of oriental numbers entitled "China Suite". Traveling around the South African Cape, with the congo drums section featured in "Cango Caves" and on to the mysterious temples of "Tikal" in Guatemala, the elementary band will continue its musical journey to other lands and cultures.

Several talented sixth grade students will make stops in Europe (featuring a brass ensemble doing the "German Hunter's Chorus") and at the islands (woodwind ensembles playing a "Calypso Morning" and taking a "Jamaican Holiday")! The full sixth grade advanced group will give us a taste of Latin American music via "Rio Bravo" while the flutes bring us back to the America's with their ensemble rendition of "Journey West".

The band will complete its tour with the reflective "Two Canadian Sketches" and end with their attitude numbers, "Downtown Blues" and "Let's Go Band II," which portray our desire to hit the open road again.

The chorus will pick right up on the travel theme as it takes the audience on a trip across the "Fifty Nifty United States." Starting in California with "California Dreamin' " and "California Here I Come" the chorus will travel east with songs honoring Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama and the Carolinas. The group will also perform "Theme from New York, New York" made popular by Frank Sinatra and, of course, a song to honor our very own state with the "Polka from Pennsylvania." The talented performers will wrap it up with an oldie but goodie, "What Did Delaware," and a tribute to the entire United States with "America the Beautiful." Sixth grade soloists will be featured throughout the program.

The elementary music department of the Mountain View School District is very proud of its many young band and chorus participants. With such musical talent and enthusiasm at the helm, it is certain that these students will provide an evening of fine musical entertainment for all those who come out to enjoy this imaginary journey on concert night.
