N. M. Churches Join For Christian Unity

On Sunday, January 18, the churches of New Milford, PA will join at an Ecumenical Service for Christian Unity at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Main St. Participating in the service will be St. John’s RC Church, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, and the United Methodist Church. Pastor David Riley, pastor of First Baptist, will be the host and officiant. The preacher will be Sr. Kathleen Smith, director of the Spiritual Care Department at Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale.

The worldwide observance, the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, began in the Episcopal Church in 1908. The commitment was to pray and minister for the fulfillment of the prayer of Jesus "that all may be one." Over the decades the observation attracted a wide sponsorship, including Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox. In 1935 Abbe Paul Couturier, a Roman Catholic priest in France, advocated a "Universal Week of Prayer for Christian Unity" during which Christians would pray together "for the unity Christ wills by the means He wills."

With the Second Vatican Council of the Roman Catholic Church, 1962-1965, an increasing number of Roman Catholics joined other Christians each year in January for common prayer for unity. Since 1968 an ecumenical group has developed common Bible texts and themes for use worldwide. The theme for 2004 is Peace and the Biblical text is "My peace I give you – not as the world gives. Let not your hearts be troubled." (John 14:23-31)

The offering at the service will benefit the Route 11 Corridor Ministry.
