Susky High Team Wins Stock Market Game

A team from Susquehanna Community High School was recognized by Prudential Financial for its stock picking expertise in the 2002-03 Stock Market Game competition conducted by University of Scranton Center for Economic Education.

The Stock Market Game is a ten-week simulation during which students from three grade categories (4-6, 7-8, 9-12) invest an imaginary $100,000 by buying stocks listed on the major securities exchanges (New York, American and NASDAQ). Students who compete in the game learn how financial markets operate and hone their mathematics and decision making skills. Separate ten-week competitions are held in the fall and spring. Team rankings are based on final portfolio values.

Pictured (l-r) is the Susquehanna Community first place Stock Market Game team: Mike Williamson (vice president, Prudential Financial), Amanda Fallon, Jason Zawisky, Joe Barnes, Nick Coleman, Richard Mazikewich (teacher).

The University of Scranton is one of eleven colleges and universities in the state that host Centers for Economic Education, each of which conducts its own Stock Market Game competition.

Teams that finished first, second and third in their grade categories (fall and spring) from the area served by the University of Scranton Center and Susquehanna University were recognized at a recent awards ceremony. The Susquehanna Community team finished first in the spring competition at the 9-12 grade level in the Susquehanna University region. Its final portfolio was worth more than $190,185 – among the highest totals in the state at any grade level.

Blue Ridge Creates Super-Size Turkeys

What bird comes to mind when you think of Thanksgiving? That’s right, the turkey! Instead of making plans to cook this fine fowl, the first grade students at Blue Ridge Elementary School constructed a turkey out of McDonald’s super-size French fry containers, as part of a thematic unit on Thanksgiving. Please visit their projects from Mrs. Button’s, Mrs. Reese’s, Mrs. Revie’s, and Mrs. Skal’s First Grade Classes at the Hallstead McDonald’s. The Blue Ridge First Grade would like to extend a big thank you to McDonald’s for giving them French fry containers and coupons. Pictured above, Blue Ridge Elementary first graders delight in displaying their super-size turkeys.
