Freedom Quilts At Historical Society

The Susquehanna County Historical Society will host the "Freedom Quilts" exhibit from October 18 through November 30. The "Freedom Quilts" project surfaced after the September 11 tragedy. "Out of the disbelief and pain, I felt I needed to do something," said Maria Rocio O’Brien, of Montrose, the project originator. "I wanted to capture a message that would make a statement for the future. I want our children to know peace without fear."

Rocio has quilting friends around the world and asked them if they would like to provide ten-inch quilted blocks with a message of freedom, peace and harmony. Rocio’s friend, Marty Kishiro, from Intec, Japan, posted a message on his website. A month later he received blocks from Japanese quilters, and in October of 2001 the blocks were sent to Rocio. The blocks contained messages of love, sorrow and most of all, support. Rocio, Stephanie Stopka, Catherine Probasco, Eileen Sickler, Annette Kennedy, Sheila Weidner, Ada Hess, and Marie McAvoy completed eight quilts in a few months’ time.

One of the "Freedom Quilts."

Rocio feels the quilts symbolize a hope for a better tomorrow and are a reminder of how we triumphed over life’s adversities. "As I view these beautiful quilts and I read their inspiring messages it comforts me. It tells me that good does triumph over evil."

The quilts will be on display during normal museum hours, Monday, Thursday and Friday, from 9-5 and Tuesday and Wednesday, 12-5. They will then travel to other Pennsylvania and New York museums.

Exhibits at the Susquehanna County Historical Society are partially funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

Old Mill Village Presents "Ghost Walks"

Things that go "Bump" in the night and events that cannot be explained in the state of Pennsylvania will be the content of the evening "Village Ghost Walks" to occur at Old Mill Village Museum, New Milford, Pennsylvania. Co-Chairs Tim and Christina Button, avid collectors of historic ghostly tales, will share their enthusiasm as tour guides and tale tellers the four evenings scheduled for the walks – Fridays and Saturdays, October 18, 19, and 25 and 26. The tours will take place each night between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00 p.m.

Upon arrival at the gate, you will be greeted by Old Mill Villagers in historic dress to tour the Village by candle light. As you visit the buildings, the guides will tell stories of ghosts and spirits that haunt the hills, valleys and villages of Pennsylvania. Perhaps you will meet the Village ghost itself.

For those not particularly interested in such tales, but not wishing to spoil the family fun, or for those not able to endure the walk, a special area will be set aside for children and/or adults complete with alternate activities. Everyone will be treated to a cup of cider (hot or cold) and a tasty treat at the end of the tour. Dave Ingerson will be on hand to entertain with his music – and to keep your mind off the things that go "Bump" in the night.

Christina Button encourages anyone who can relate a true local (Susquehanna County) ghost story, or wishes more information, to call her prior to October 18. Her number is (570) 434-3353. For large groups planning to enjoy the evening, she urges a call to the Village in advance at (570) 465-3448 in order to better accommodate your party.
