Susky Students Make District Band, Orchestra

Susquehanna Community High School announces that six of its students have been selected for District 9 Band. Mikela Ackley was selected for performance on the bass clarinet, Amy Landry and Jessica Williams were chosen for clarinet, Heather Warneke will perform on the baritone, and Katherine McHale and Amanda Fallon qualified to play French horn. This was truly an honor for these students to be chosen for performance in early January. When the students perform at that time, they will also compete for the Region IV Band which will be performing in March. Two sophomore band members from Susquehanna were honored with selection for the District Orchestra. They are Katherine McHale and Amanda Fallon.

Ag Scholarship Program Continues

Monsanto and American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture are again cooperating to provide a special college scholarship program, targeted to students of farm families. College bound high school seniors are eligible for one of 100 scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each. The student must be pursuing a career in agriculture and be from a farm or ranch family that is actively engaged in production agriculture. Scholarships are awarded based on an applicant’s interest and involvement in agriculture, extracurricular activities and ability to communicate their potential. Applicant does not have to be a member of the Farm Bureau or FFA. Selection is based on leadership activities, work experiences, academic record and essay questions.

Kathie Shelly, Susquehanna County Farm Bureau’s Promotion and Education Chairperson states, "The goal is to help young people from farm families develop their skills for a challenging future in agriculture – so they will return their knowledge to America’s rural communities." Kathie has applications available. She can be reached at (570) 756-2429. All applications must be postmarked by February 15, 2002.

An impartial selection committee, composed of agricultural educators and agri-business representatives will select winners, by June 1.

The National FFA Foundation is administering this program and any questions should be directed to them at National FFA Center (317) 802-4321. Applications are also available on-line at www.farmsource.com or www.agfoundation.org.

Susky Teachers Research Program

On November 16, Mr. Bronson Stone, Mr. Joe Zabielski, and Mr. Matt Misiura of the Susquehanna Community High School traveled to Troy Middle School in Troy, PA to observe Accelerated Math in action. Accelerated Math is a computer software program designed to help classroom teachers teach mathematical concepts while holding the students accountable for their own learning. At the heart of the program is individualized learning. Students who use the program progress at their own pace, mastering basic concepts before moving on to more advanced topics. All three educators were impressed with the program and how the students responded to it. More research is to be completed to see if such a program would be feasible at Susquehanna.
